今回は、滋賀県大津市の名物「三井寺力餅」をご紹介します。
やわらかいお餅に特製のきな粉をたっぷりかけた、懐かしいお味のお土産です。
This time, we’d like to introduce “Miidera Chikara Mochi,” a specialty of Ōtsu City in Shiga Prefecture.
It’s a traditional Japanese sweet made of soft rice cakes generously coated with roasted soybean flour (kinako).
「三井寺力餅」とは？
滋賀県大津市にある「三井寺（園城寺）」は天台寺門宗の総本山で、「大津京」に都が移された飛鳥時代に創建された由緒あるお寺です。
総本堂である金堂や、「近江八景」の一つに数えられる「三井の晩鐘」のほか、国宝64点、重要文化財720点を所有している名刹です。
景観も見どころが多く、春は桜、秋は紅葉を楽しむことができたり、展望台から琵琶湖や大津市街を一望することができたりすることから、地元の方々や観光客の人々から愛されています。
多くのドラマや映画のロケ地になっているので、聖地巡礼を楽しむのもオススメですよ♪
この三井寺の名物が、「力餅」です。
「力餅」という名前は、武蔵坊弁慶に由来しているそうです。

毎朝5時から手作りされるお餅はやわらかで、筆者はよく滋賀から四国まで持ち帰るのですが、硬くなっておらず、もちもちのまま食べることができます。
たっぷりかかったきな粉が緑がかっているのは、青大豆と抹茶がブレンドされているからだそうです。
出来立てだからでしょうか、お店独自の蜜やきな粉で味付けされているからでしょうか、家で自分で作って食べるきな粉餅とは全く異なります。
老若男女、全ての方にオススメのお土産ですよ♪
消費期限は？
「三井寺力餅」は、防腐剤等の添加物を使っていないため、消費期限は2日間です。
お友達に配るというよりは、現地で大津の景色を見ながら楽しんだり、旅行から帰ってきた日に思い出を振り返りながらお家で味わうのがオススメのお土産です。
個包装なの？何個入り？
「三井寺力餅」は、個包装されていません。
箱入りと、家庭用パックが売られており、
【箱入り】7本、10本、12本、14本、16本、18本
【家庭用パック】3本、5本、6本、8本、12本、16本、20本
があるようです。
これ以外にも、入り用の本数を用意してもらえるとのこと。
あまりの美味しさに、1人で3〜4本はペロリと食べられるので、たくさん入っているパックがあるのはありがたいです。

「三井寺力餅」は、滋賀県内に2軒のお店があります。
【三井寺力餅本家】は、京阪電車の「びわ湖浜大津駅」のすぐそばにあります。
琵琶湖や、ミシガンクルーズに乗れる大津港もほど近いので、大津観光の途中で立ち寄る場合はこちらのお店がオススメです。
お茶や抹茶付きのセットや、ソフトクリーム付きのセットを、お庭を眺めながら楽しむことができますよ。
朝の7時から19時まで開いていて、しかも年中無休なのは、とてもありがたいです。

What is “Miidera Chikaramochi”?
Located in Ōtsu City, Shiga Prefecture, Miidera (Onjō-ji Temple) is a historic temple with a tradition spanning over 1,300 years.
It is renowned for its Main Hall (Kondō), the famous “Evening Bell of Miidera,” one of the Eight Views of Ōmi, as well as its vast collection of cultural treasures, including 64 National Treasures and 720 Important Cultural Properties.
The temple grounds offer beautiful scenery throughout the seasons—cherry blossoms in spring, vibrant autumn foliage, and sweeping views of Lake Biwa and the city of Ōtsu from the observation deck.
Loved by both locals and visitors, Miidera is truly a place of cultural and natural beauty.
The mochi, handmade fresh every morning from 5 a.m., is incredibly soft.
The kinako (roasted soybean flour) sprinkled generously on top has a slightly green tint, as it’s blended with green soybeans and matcha.
This delightful treat makes a perfect souvenir for people of all ages.
Best-by date
Since “Miidera Chikara Mochi” is made without preservatives or other additives, it is a safe and wholesome sweet with a shelf life of only two days.
Because it doesn’t keep for long, it’s best enjoyed locally while taking in the beautiful scenery of Ōtsu, rather than bringing it back to share with friends.
How many are in a pack?
“Mii-dera Chikara Mochi” does not come in individual wrapping.
They are sold either in boxes or in packs for home use:
Boxed sets: 7, 10, 12, 14, 16, or 18 pieces
Home-use packs: 3, 5, 6, 8, 12, 16, or 20 pieces
It seems that they can also prepare other quantities upon request.
Because these sweets are so delicious, it’s easy to eat 3 to 4 pieces by yourself in no time, so it’s nice to have larger packs available.
Where to Buy
[Mii-dera Chikara Mochi Honke]
This shop is located right next to Keihan Railway’s Biwako-Hamaotsu Station.
It’s also close to Lake Biwa and Otsu Port, where you can board the Michigan cruise ship, making it a convenient stop during sightseeing in Otsu.
Here, you can enjoy sets that include tea or matcha, as well as soft serve with Chikara Mochi, while relaxing in the garden.
The shop is open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. every day of the year—very convenient!

This one is perfect for a break during a road trip.
They sell soft-serve ice cream made with the kinako (roasted soybean flour) used for Chikara Mochi.
It’s the perfect treat to satisfy that “I want ice cream at a highway service area!” craving.
