「土左日記」とは？
平安時代に紀貫之が執筆した『土佐日記』。
日本最古の日記であること、女性目線で書かれていること……国語の授業で習ったのを覚えている方も多いのではないでしょうか。
『土佐日記』には、主人公が高知での任期を終えて京都に帰るまでの旅の記録が、虚構を織り交ぜて記されています。
土佐での別れの場面では、当時の土佐の魅力的な人々や情景が、臨場感たっぷりに描かれています。
高知銘菓「土左日記」は、そんな『土佐日記』や紀貫之に敬愛を込めて作られたお菓子で、なんと70年以上の歴史があるそうです。
北海道産のこしあんを包んだ求肥はもちもちで、外側のそぼろはカリカリ食感。
食感がおもしろく、何個食べても飽きないので、家族や仲間内で争奪戦になること間違いなしですよ！
「いちごみるくあん」や「ゆずあん」「しまんと栗あん」など、季節限定のお味があるのも嬉しいところ。
高知に何度でも遊びに行きたくなりますね！

賞味期限は？
「土左日記」は、常温で約50日間保存できます！
50日もあれば、「お土産、賞味期限内に渡せるかな〜」と心配する必要がなさそうですね。
個包装なの？何個入り？
「土左日記」は、個包装されています。
個包装のパッケージは、シンプルながらも品を感じるデザインとなっています。
4個入り、6個入り、8個入り、10個入り、15個入り、20個入り、30個入りとバリエーションがたくさんあるので、自分用や職場用など、用途に合わせて選ぶことができます♪
個包装なのはありがたいですが、個人的には、『土左日記』という名前らしく、本のようなデザインになっている外箱もぜひ楽しんで欲しいです。
中には紀貫之の和歌も書かれていて、菓子処青柳さんのこだわりが詰まったデザインになっています。
中には、この箱を目当てに購入される方もいるようです。
厚紙でしっかりしているので、我が家でも祖母が小物入れ代わりに使っていました。

中でも、工場直売の「プラスワン店」（高知市大津乙）では、美味しい和菓子をお得に買えたという口コミが多くありました。

What is “Tosa Nikki”?
One of the classical literary works that Japanese students study in language and history classes is Tosa Nikki (The Tosa Diary).
Written during the Heian period, Tosa Nikki is Japan’s oldest diary.
It blends fact and fiction to describe the journey of its protagonist—a government official—returning to Kyoto after completing his term in Kochi.
In the opening farewell scene, the people and scenery of Kochi at that time are vividly depicted, making readers feel as if they’re right there.
The famous Kochi confectionery “Tosa Nikki” was created as a tribute to The Tosa Diary and its author, Ki no Tsurayuki.
Amazingly, it has a history of over 70 years!
The chewy gyuhi (soft mochi) filled with smooth red bean paste from Hokkaido pairs perfectly with the crispy soboro coating.
The combination of textures is delightful, and it’s so delicious that you’ll never get tired of it—be ready for a friendly tug-of-war with your family or friends over the last piece!
Depending on the season, you can also enjoy limited-edition flavors inspired by Japan’s seasonal ingredients, such as yuzu, strawberry, and chestnut!

The shelf life of “Tosa Nikki” is 50 days from the production date.
Please store at room temperature, avoiding high heat and direct sunlight.
If it has a shelf life of 50 days, you can buy it as a gift for your friends without worrying about it going bad.
How many are in a pack?
“Tosa Nikki” is individually wrapped and comes in packs of 4, 6, 8, 10, 15, 20 and 30.
There are plenty of variations to choose from, so you can pick the one that best suits your needs—whether it’s for yourself or for your workplace.
The individual packaging is convenient, but personally, I hope you’ll also enjoy the outer box, which is designed like a book—just like its name, Tosa Nikki (“The Tosa Diary”).
Inside the box, you’ll even find a waka poem written by Ki no Tsurayuki, showing the maker’s attention to detail and love for tradition.
Some people even buy it just for the beautiful box itself!
It’s made of sturdy cardboard, and at my house, my grandmother used to repurpose it as a little storage box.
Where to Buy
The confectionery shop “Kashidokoro Aoyagi,” which makes and sells Tosa Nikki, has several directly managed stores within Kochi Prefecture.
However, many of them are located in suburban areas and can be difficult to access without a car, so it’s recommended to buy Tosa Nikki at souvenir shops in or near major stations instead.
Since Tosa Nikki is one of the most popular souvenirs in Kochi—ranking among the top two—it’s not hard to find.
You can purchase it at places like JR Kochi Station, Kochi Ryoma Airport, and highway service areas.
Tourist Information
Facing the Pacific Ocean, Kochi Prefecture is famous for its delicious seafood, especially Katsuo no Tataki (seared bonito).
It’s also known for its magnificent natural scenery — the crystal-clear Shimanto, Niyodo, and Yoshino Rivers, and Katsurahama Beach, where the contrast between the green pines and white sand is simply breathtaking.
