本日は、熊本県のお土産「誉の陣太鼓」をご紹介します。
季節を問わず楽しめる、熊本定番のごちそうです！
Today, I’d like to introduce “Homare no Jintaiko,” a famous souvenir sweet from Kumamoto Prefecture.
Loved throughout the year, it is one of Kumamoto’s classic treats!
「誉の陣太鼓」とは？
「誉の陣太鼓」は、「お菓子の香梅」さんが製造・販売されている、熊本県を代表する銘菓です。
寒天で固めた粒あんでもっちりとした求肥を包んだ和菓子で、戦場で鳴らされる陣太鼓の凛々しさにあやかってその名前が付けられたそうです。
勇ましいお名前や、手に取るとずっしりとした存在感があることから、食べる前は「甘ったるく重い感じなのかな？」と想像していたのですが……
実際にいただいてみると、餡は甘さが控えめで、とても上品なお味でした。
寒天がつるりとしているので、暑い時期は冷やして食べるのがオススメです。
上品なお味以外に、このお土産を推したいポイントが２つあります。
まず1つ目は、紙のナイフを使って、好きなサイズに切って食べるところ。
紙のナイフで切って食べるお菓子は初めてだったので、大人でもワクワクしてしまいました！
実際には「紙製のナイフでちゃんと切れるのかな？」と思っていたのですが、力を加えずともすんなり切れました。
紙製なので、お子様も安心ですね。
2つ目は、素材にこだわって作られているところ。
北海道産の小豆と阿蘇の伏流水を使って丁寧に製造されていて、添加物は一切含まれていないとのことです。
大切な方にも、自信を持って贈ることができますね♪
賞味期限は？
「誉の陣太鼓」の賞味期限は、約一ヶ月とのことです。
添加物を使っていないお菓子は、日持ちしないのが一般的ですが……「誉の陣太鼓」は独自のパッケージ技術のおかげで、美味しいまま長持ちするそうです。
賞味期限が一ヶ月あれば、安心ですね♪

What is “Jindaiko”?
“Homare no Jindaiko” is one of Kumamoto Prefecture’s most famous traditional sweets, produced and sold by Okashi no Kobai.
It is a Japanese confection made of sweet red bean paste set with agar and filled with soft, chewy gyuhi (mochi-like rice cake).
A jindaiko is a drum that was traditionally used on battlefields to boost the morale of warriors. The sweet was named after this powerful and dignified symbol.
Because of its bold name and surprisingly substantial weight, I imagined it would be quite rich and overwhelmingly sweet before trying it…
However, when I actually tasted it, I found the sweetness of the bean paste to be pleasantly restrained and remarkably refined.
The smooth texture of the agar also makes it especially enjoyable when chilled, so I highly recommend serving it cold during the warmer months.
Besides its elegant flavor, there are two other reasons why I would highly recommend this sweet.
The first is the unique way it is eaten: using the small paper knife included in the package to cut it into whatever size you like.
I had never eaten a sweet that was meant to be cut with a paper knife before, so it felt surprisingly exciting—even as an adult!
To be honest, I wondered whether a paper knife would actually be able to cut through it properly, but it sliced through effortlessly without requiring much force.
Since the knife is made of paper, it is also safe for children to use.
The second reason is the care taken in selecting the ingredients.
According to the manufacturer, Homare no Jintaiko is carefully made using red beans from Hokkaido and spring water from the Aso region, and it contains no additives whatsoever.
That attention to quality makes it a gift you can confidently give to someone special♪
Best-by date
The shelf life of “Homare no Jindaiko” is approximately one month.
In general, sweets made without additives do not keep very long.
However, thanks to its unique packaging technology, Homare no Jintaiko stays fresh and delicious for an extended period.
With a shelf life of about one month, you can purchase it with confidence as a souvenir♪
Individually wrapped?
Each “Homare no Jindaiko” is carefully individually wrapped.
A paper knife is also included with each piece, making it easy to enjoy.

At a little over 200 yen per piece, it may be slightly expensive for buying in large quantities to hand out.

Okashi no Kobai operates many directly managed stores throughout Kumamoto Prefecture.
If you’re traveling in the area, the stores at Kumamoto Station, Kumamoto Castle, and Hakata Station are especially convenient places to pick up some souvenirs♪
In addition to these stores, Homare no Jintaiko is also available at selected train stations, department stores, Kumamoto Airport, Fukuoka Airport, and Kagoshima Airport throughout Kyushu.
